"Leaving the Old Life Behind"

"The Bridge That Was Never Crossed Back"

The village of Ashbrook was divided by a wide river. An old wooden bridge connected to the two sides. On one side stood the "Old Quarter," a place known for broken homes, drunkenness, bitterness, and endless feuds. On the other side was Green Valley, where families lived in peace and worked together.
Everyone knew the bridge, but few crossed it permanently. Most who did eventually wander back to the familiar life they had always known.
One evening, a young man named Caleb stood at the bridge carrying a heavy backpack. Inside were reminders of his past—a flask that had fueled his addiction; letters filled with anger, money earned dishonestly, and a photograph of friends who had encouraged him to make destructive choices.
As he stared across the river, an elderly carpenter approached.
"Why are you standing here?" the carpenter asked.
"I'm tired," Caleb replied. "I want a new life, but I don't know if I can leave the old one."
The carpenter smiled gently.
"You'll never enjoy what's ahead if you keep carrying the old life behind."
Caleb looked at his backpack.
"But these things are part of who I am."
The carpenter shook his head.
"No. They are part of who you were."
Those words settled deep into Caleb's heart.
Slowly, he opened the bag.
One by one, he removed its contents.
The flask went into the river.
The dishonest money was returned to those he had wronged.
The angry letters were burned.
The photograph he folded carefully—not because he hated the people, but because he knew he could no longer follow their path.
With every item he laid down, the backpack became lighter.
When it was finally empty, Caleb crossed the bridge.
Life in Green Valley wasn't effortless. There were difficult days, temptations, and moments when voices from the Old Quarter called him back.
"Come on! Nothing has changed"
But every time he looked behind him, he remembered something remarkable.
The carpenter had dismantled the bridge.
"There is no road back," the carpenter called across the river.
"Why did you destroy it?" Caleb asked.
"So, you can stop wondering whether you should return."
Years passed.
Caleb became known as a man of honesty, kindness, and compassion. People from the Old Quarter began asking why he had changed.
He would smile and say,
"I didn't just cross a bridge. I left an old life behind."
Then he would tell them about the carpenter who had shown him that freedom begins the moment we stop clinging to what God has called us to leave.
Spiritual Lesson
Many people want God's promises while still holding tightly to old habits, sinful lifestyles, unforgiveness, unhealthy relationships, or harmful patterns. God calls us not merely to improve the old life but to become new.
The Apostle Paul writes:
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Leaving the old life behind means more than changing our surroundings—it means allowing Christ to transform our hearts.
As Paul also teaches:
"Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life... and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God." (Ephesians 4:22–24)
Like Caleb, we must lay down the burdens that keep us from fully following Christ. We cannot walk confidently into God's future while constantly looking back at the past.
Jesus gave this powerful reminder:
"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God." (Luke 9:62)
When we surrender our old life to Christ, He doesn't simply repair what was broken—He makes us new.

Are you born again? If you've not receive Jesus Christ into your life , now is the time.
Say this Prayer of Salvation
  • "Dear God, I know I am a sinner."

  • "Thank you for saving me and giving me a new life. Amen."
