The challenges one faces in serving God and the benefits that follow if one is able to sail through the dark night of the race, trusting God alone, and not leaning on one's strength.

The story of Manasseh and the Lantern.

When Manasseh first heard the King's call to embark on a journey, he imagined bright roads, cheering crowds, and victories that would come easily. With confidence in his own abilities, he packed strong ropes, sharp tools, and enough provisions to last a lifetime.

The King smiled and handed him only one thing—a small lantern.

"This will be enough," the King said.

Mansseh thanked Him, though secretly he wondered why the King had overlooked everything else and have given him just a lantern.

The journey began well. Manasseh crossed rivers, climbed hills, and solved problems with his own skill. Each success convinced him that his strength was carrying him closer to the King's purpose.

Then he entered the Valley of Shadows, the dark night.

The sunlight disappeared. The paths became confusing. His ropes snapped. His tools broke. His provisions ran out. The lantern seemed too small to push back the overwhelming darkness.

For the first time, Manasseh grew angry.

"King," he cried into the silence, "why did You send me here with so little?"

No answer came—only the quiet glow of the lantern at his feet.

Days turned into weeks. His confidence dissolved into weakness. His prayers became simpler. No longer did he ask for an easier road. Instead, he whispered, "Just help me take the next step LORD."

With every step, the lantern revealed only enough light for the next few feet. Never the whole journey.

At first this frustrated him. Later he realized it was teaching him something greater than courage—it was teaching him to trust.

Slowly, he stopped leaning on what he could do and began to depend on the One who had called him. The darkness had not disappeared but fear no longer ruled him.

One morning, the valley ended.

Manasseh stepped onto a mountain where the sunrise spread across the land. Looking back, he saw that the valley had shaped him more than the easy roads ever had. The man who emerged was not stronger because of his own power, but because he had learned to rely on the King's.

To his surprise, the little lantern now shone brighter than before. Others who were still wandering in dark valleys saw its light and followed it toward hope.

When they asked how he had found the way, Manasseh smiled.

"I didn't," he said. "I simply learned to trust the One holding me when I could no longer hold myself."

And then he understood why the King had given him only a lantern. If he had been given everything else, he might never have discovered that the greatest gift was not strength for the journey, but the presence of the King in every step.

For those who endure the dark night without letting go of God, discover treasures that cannot be found in daylight: unshakable faith, humble hearts, peaceful confidence, and a love that no trial can extinguish. They learn that God's grace is sufficient, His strength is made perfect in weakness, and those who trust Him completely will never walk alone—even through the deepest valley.

This short fable illustrates a beautiful truth: our earthly mission is an active partnership with the divine. God provides the unshakeable foundation, you and I are the active agents, and our shared mission is to bring light, hope, and love into a broken world. I hope you enjoyed it.

Now reflect on your Christian journey, see if it’s consistent with God’s Word,

plan and purpose for you.
